In Afghanistan, I was fortunate enough to have been a part of a remarkable team. It was one of those teams that just clicked, where everyone got along, morale was high, and no task was too big for us to handle. That in the face of adversity, we would all pull together, rather than fall apart at the seams.
There was one thing about this team, that had a profound effect on me personally. The daily debrief. The team leader would always begin by admitting a personal failure or shortcoming. Something that he could have done better, that he needed to address himself. This resulted in a domino effect. Each member of the team would then do as he did. No ego.
When it came to what the team needed to improve on or fix, the team leader would speak last. He would simply step back and listen.
People are less likely to put forward any ideas that conflict with the leaders. By taking a step back and listening, the team is more likely to actively engage, innovate, and produce good results.
